Specification Updates

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regularly updates ENERGY STAR product specifications. The following information includes some helpful reminders as you prepare for upcoming specification changes and manage your inventory of ENERGY STAR certified products.

Recent and upcoming specification activities include

  • ENERGY STAR Commercial Ovens
    ENERGY STAR is calling for commercial combination oven energy performance data. In response to partner requests for additional time to submit data, ENERGY STAR will accept submissions by January 25, 2019 in order to proceed with a version 3.0 specification revision. The product development webpage contains further details on this process including a background memo and template for data submissions. Please submit data to commercialovens@energystar.gov.   • ENERGY STAR Commercial Dishwashers
    EPA is preparing to publish the ENERGY STAR Commercial Dishwashers Draft 1 Version 3.0 specification in Q1 2019. EPA has been working with manufacturers and other stakeholders throughout 2018 in preparation for the release of the Draft 1 Version 3.0.   • ENERGY STAR Commercial Coffee Brewers Version 1.1
    The ENERGY STAR Commercial Coffee Brewers Version 1.1 became effective on May 18, 2018. Additional information about certifying your commercial coffee brewer products for ENERGY STAR, including a list of EPA-recognized certification bodies, can be found by visiting energystar.gov/3rdpartycert.
  • ENERGY STAR Automatic Commercial Ice Makers Version 3.0
    The ENERGY STAR Automatic Commercial Ice Makers Version 3.0 became effective on January 28, 2018. Approximately 150 products are currently certified to version 3.0. Check out the current list of certified automatic commercial ice makers here.

Upcoming Events

Meet the ENERGY STAR Team at the 2019 North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) Show

The 2019 NAFEM Show will be in Orlando, FL on February 7-9, 2019. Foodservice professionals from around the world will gather to learn about new trends, attend education seminars, see the latest equipment and products from over 500 of the world's leading equipment and supplies manufacturers, and network with their peers. In 2017, more than 10,000 attendees visited the NAFEM Show, and almost 50 percent were dealers/distributors, 30 percent were operators, and 10 percent were consultants.

Members of the ENERGY STAR team will be attending the show and are looking forward to meeting with partners and other stakeholders.

Prior to the show, on February 6, 2019, the ENERGY STAR team plans to hold a specification development stakeholder meeting highlighting current work on commercial dishwashers and ovens as well as ongoing projects beyond specification development. The ENERGY STAR Awards honor organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through energy efficiency. The awards ceremony will be held on April 11, 2019 in Washington, DC. Learn more about past winners and find out more information here.


Recent Events

2018 ENERGY STAR Products Partner Meeting

The 2018 ENERGY STAR Products Partner Meeting was held this fall in Phoenix, AZ. The three-day meeting included plenary sessions with policy and program updates, as well as opportunities for
one-on-one networking meetings and interactions with other ENERGY STAR stakeholders. Presentations from the Partner Meeting can be found here.


2018 National Restaurant Association Show

The ENERGY STAR team attended and held a workshop at the 2018 National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago, IL. The show consisted of more than 1,200 exhibitors, including more than 65 ENERGY STAR manufacturer partners. EPA also facilitated the first ENERGY STAR CFS Stakeholder Workshop during the show, and over 75 CFS stakeholders attended the event. The ENERGY STAR team discussed the program and its benefits in the commercial food service space. A panel of experts from Arby's, PRIDE, KCL and the National Restaurant Association also discussed how they leverage and promote ENERGY STAR. Laura Thomas, from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, explored midstream program models, which utilities are leveraging to increase sales of ENERGY STAR CFS equipment. The team plans to attend next year's National Restaurant Association Show and organize another opportunity for stakeholders to meet and discuss the ENERGY STAR Program.


Updates on Additional Commercial Product Categories of Interest

2018 I2SL

In October, the ENERGY STAR team attended the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) Annual Conference in Raleigh, NC.

The team met with partners and stakeholders to discuss lab-grade refrigeration and is excited to learn more about other areas for energy savings in laboratories. ENERGY STAR is also looking for stakeholders who would be interested in collaborating on the types of tools and resources that would be helpful to promote this product category within and beyond lab grade refrigeration. ENERGY STAR Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machines

On September 10, 2018, EPA published the ENERGY STAR Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machine Draft 1 Version 4.0 specification, which included amendments to the ENERGY STAR certification requirements and scope expansion to include combination A and combination B type machines. EPA hosted a stakeholder webinar on September 25, 2018, to discuss the proposed changes to the specification. Comments were due to EPA on October 9, 2018, and a Draft 2 specification is scheduled to be released no later than January 2019. ENERGY STAR Water Coolers

EPA plans to revise the ENERGY STAR Water Cooler Specification in 2019. The current ENERGY STAR Version 2.0 requirements for water coolers have been in effect since February 1, 2014, and due in part to rising market penetration, EPA is revising the specification. To review the current specification, please visit the Version 2.0 product development webpage.
