2024 Modular Packaged Commercial Refrigeration Systems
The ENERGY STAR® Emerging Technology Award (ETA) is given to innovative technologies that meet rigorous performance criteria to reduce energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to recognize Modular Packaged Commercial Refrigeration Systems for the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for 2024.
Products that meet the performance criteria are listed on the Qualified Product List once it is determined that all award criteria have been satisfied. Manufacturers can submit documentation for eligible modular packaged commercial refrigeration systems to EmergingTech@energystar.gov.

Benefits of ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award-Winning Systems:
The characteristics of this system are that the refrigeration systems are self-contained; there is one packaged cooling system per refrigerator/freezer (eliminating the rooftop unit); they use low GWP refrigerants, and they work as “drop in” replacements for legacy technologies. If a unit becomes inoperable, technicians can remove the modular refrigeration system and install a replacement system without removing perishable products from the cabinet. They offer enhanced energy efficiency, simplified maintenance, repairs, and retrofits, minimizing downtime for the operators. The modular refrigeration systems operate using low-GWP refrigerants and eligible models are available in various sizes and configurations, including solid and transparent door refrigerators and freezers. Additionally, the versatility of this technology allows the operator to convert their cabinet to operate at different storage temperatures by changing out the modular system, if needed, allowing a single unit to operate as a refrigerator or a freezer.
Winning Products Must Demonstrate That They:
- ENERGY STAR certified to Version 5.0, or above, must be listed on the ENERGY STAR Certified Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers Product Finder.
- Outperform the Maximum Daily Energy Consumption (MDEC) for ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers by a minimum of 8%.
- Contain refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) not to exceed 5 and approved in the U.S. market.
- Are approved for use and available for sale in the U.S. market.
