2024 Commercial HVAC Electric Motors
The ENERGY STAR® Emerging Technology Award (ETA) is given to innovative technologies that meet rigorous performance criteria to reduce energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to recognize Commercial HVAC Electric Motors for the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for 2024.
Products that meet the performance criteria will be listed on a Qualified Product List once it is determined that all award criteria have been satisfied. Manufacturers can submit documentation for eligible commercial HVAC electric motors to EmergingTech@energystar.gov.
Criteria Development Process Documents
Benefits of ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award-Winning Systems:
- Energy Efficiency: Compared to standard IE3 induction motors, IE5 motors consume significantly less energy. This translates to cost savings over the motor’s lifecycle.
- Reduced CO₂ Emissions: By operating more efficiently, IE5 motors contribute to a greener environment by minimizing carbon dioxide emissions from electric power generation. This aligns with sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.
- Enhanced Reliability: IE5 motors are designed for reliability and longevity. Their advanced construction and materials ensure stable performance, reducing the risk of motor failure and downtime.
- Synergy with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): When paired with VFDs, IE5 motors offer even greater energy savings. VFDs allow precise control of motor speed, optimizing energy usage based on actual HVAC system requirements.
Winning Products Must Demonstrate That They:
- Meet IE5 Ultra-Premium Efficiency classification based on testing in accordance to IEC 60034 – 2-1: 2014.
- Have an output power between 5 kW and 50 kW.
- Have an operating voltage ranging from 230V to 690V.
- Are approved for use and available for sale in the U.S. market.
