Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) is a customer-owned electric cooperative. Over the past year, SMECO continued to promote energy efficiency across the residential home and consumer products sectors, delivering nearly 78,000 megawatt-hours of electricity savings across its ENERGY STAR® programs. Key 2023 accomplishments include:

• Providing incentives for more than 1,100 ENERGY STAR certified homes, an increase of 47% compared with 2022, representing 73% of all new homes built in its service territory last year.
• Leveraging multiple channels to better reach customers and drive the purchase of a broad array of ENERGY STAR certified appliances using the ENERGY STAR Retail Products Platform, distributor-focused midstream channels, and online marketing.
• Developing educational materials featuring ENERGY STAR for schools in its service territory about energy savings. More than 1,400 students received a complimentary energy efficiency kit containing ENERGY STAR certified products and a coupon for SMECO’s online store.
