Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is a school district in Virginia. FCPS uses ENERGY STAR® to engage students, conserve energy, and protect the environment, and as a catalyst for stewardship throughout FCPS schools and the community. Key 2023 accomplishments include:

  • Achieving ENERGY STAR certification at 72 schools in 2023.
  • Achieving energy savings greater than 20% and $80 million since 2014, as well as avoiding more than 28,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions by upgrading to LED technology, maintaining solar arrays at 10 schools, and more.
  • Maintaining the FCPS Energy Education Team, which strives to reduce district energy use and cost without negatively affecting health and safety, the educational environment, or productivity.
  • Improving both indoor air quality and energy efficiency through heating, ventilation, and air conditioning projects, and aligning scheduled events with actual building utilization through the FSDirect scheduling system to reduce energy waste.
  • Using a dashboard to educate students, staff, parents, and the community about ENERGY STAR, including ENERGY STAR scores.
  • Committing to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions compared with the 2019 baseline and having 25% of energy use come from renewables by 2030, with a long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
In 2020 ENERGY STAR and its partners helped Americans avoid more than $40 Billion in energy costs
