CEMEX USA, a producer of cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates, and other building materials and solutions, deployed the ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry to advance energy management in its ready-mix concrete operations. Key 2023 accomplishments include:

  • Investing in the decarbonization of its operations by installing new equipment to improve efficiency at a finish mill, sourcing 100% renewable electricity at a cement plant, and launching more than 30 thermal and electrical efficiency upgrade projects, with a total budgeted cost of approximately $15 million.
  • Partnering with Synhelion and Sandia National Laboratories to investigate methods for replacing fossil fuels with concentrated solar thermal energy in clinker production, which is a project supported by a $3.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Replacing 30 diesel ready-mix trucks and nine transport tractors with low-emission, compressed natural gas vehicles.
  • Replacing three diesel-powered locomotives with near-zero emissions locomotives.
  • Educating more than 2,000 employees on sustainability and carbon neutrality through their virtual Sustainability Academy and engaging employees in challenges to save energy through their Always in Action app, where employees logged 284 energy saving actions.
  • Supporting the ENERGY STAR industrial network by speaking on the company’s experience with engaging small sites in energy management during the Annual ENERGY STAR Industrial Meeting.
In 2020 ENERGY STAR and its partners helped Americans avoid more than $40 Billion in energy costs
