Televisions Specification Versions 4 and 5

The Version 5.3 ENERGY STAR Specification for Televisions was finalized on January 24th, 2011. These requirements establish challenging On Mode power consumption levels, take steps to ensure a TV is viewed in the mode in which it qualified for ENERGY STAR so consumer savings are realized, and curb energy associated with downloading program guide data. The effective date for the Version 5.3 requirements is September 30, 2011.

Stakeholder Conference Call - December 1, 2010

EPA held a conference call on December 1, 2010 to discuss the proposal to change the Version 5 effective date and the proposal to address power overhang.

EPA Proposal Memo

EPA has released the following memo to outline proposed modifications to the Televisions program and to provide clarification on the test procedure for DAM. EPA welcomes written comments on these issues. Please submit comments to televisions@energystar.gov no later than December 15, 2010.

Hospitality Television DAM Test Procedure

EPA is authorizing the use of a temporary test protocol for measuring DAM energy use for hospitality televisions, as defined in Version 4.1. All other televisions with a DAM mode must qualify using the existing ROVI DAM test protocol.

EPA also seeks stakeholder comment on this alternate DAM test procedure for use by hospitality televisions. Please provide comments to Owen Sanford at ICF, osanford@icfi.com, or Katharine Kaplan at kaplan.katharine@epa.gov. EPA would appreciate your comments no later than May 21, 2010. EPA will host a conference call on May 10, 2010 from 11–12:30 US Eastern Time to discuss this temporary test protocol. Please call into 866-299-3188, access code 202-343-9120#.
