Displays Specification Version 6.0
The Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR specification for Displays has been finalized and will take effect on June 1, 2013. Materials related to the revision process are provided below. Partners and other interested parties with questions or concerns regarding these materials or the revision process can contact Verena Radulovic, EPA, at Radulovic.Verena@epa.gov. To be added to the contact list, stakeholders are encouraged to contact displays@energystar.gov with their contact information. Manufacturers may elect to have their certification body (CB) certify their eligible products to the Version 6.0 requirements from now on. The program requirements, including the specification, and additional information are available through the links below.
EPA has updated relevant ENERGY STAR electronics product specifications to reflect that the Single- and Multiple-voltage EPSs shall meet the Level V or higher performance requirements under the International Efficiency Marking Protocol. This update does not affect currently certified products but rather allows products with a level VI EPS to be certified as ENERGY STAR.
EPA released the Final Draft Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays specification, developed in consultation with the European Commission, with a cover letter, test method, partner commitments, and comment summaries. The proposed Final Draft requirements reflect stakeholder feedback received on Draft 3 of the specification and Draft 4 of the test method. Stakeholders are invited to review these documents and submit comments via email to displays@energystar.gov by June 29, 2012.
DOE and EPA released a document that provides a proposed approach for testing Displays with ABC enabled by default by clarifying the light source and its position relative to the ABC sensor. In addition, DOE provided an overview of its testing that was conducted in response to stakeholder comments on the previous draft and the results. Stakeholders are invited to review this document, comment responses to previous stakeholder comments, and the associated testing results, and submit comments via email to displays@energystar.gov by May 10, 2012.
Following the February 22, 2012, webinar stakeholders expressed interest in further engaging with EPA on two aspects of the Draft 3 specification:
- On Mode levels, including treatment of enhanced performance displays
- Type and placement of the light source for testing products with Automatic Brightness Control enabled
In an effort to provide additional opportunity for stakeholder engagement in shaping this specification, EPA:
- Distributed revised On Mode power levels for displays with a diagonal screen size 0" < d < 30" and any computer monitors with a diagonal screen size 30" (see link below)
- Extended the comment period for all elements of Draft 3, including these supplemental On Mode levels, until March 21, 2012, and
- Is re-examining, together with DOE, the placement and type of light source used when testing products with Automatic Brightness Control (ABC). EPA and DOE intend to discuss this issue further with stakeholders in the coming weeks.
EPA hosted a webinar to discuss the Draft 3 Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays specification.
EPA released the Draft 3 Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays specification, developed in consultation with the European Commission, along with a cover letter, test method, partner commitments, data reporting template, and a masked dataset. The proposed Draft 3 requirements reflect stakeholder feedback received on Draft 2, outlined in the comment summary. Stakeholders are invited to review these documents and submit comments via email to displays@energystar.gov by March 9, 2012.
EPA has clarified parts of the Version 5.1 ENERGY STAR Displays specification to indicate removal of Tier 2 requirements, which are being superseded by the Version 6.0 specification revision.
EPA hosted an in-person stakeholder meeting in Washington D.C. to discuss the Draft 2 Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays specification.
EPA released the Draft 2 Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays specification, developed in consultation with the European Commission, along with a cover letter, test method, and Partner Commitments. The proposed Draft 2 requirements reflect stakeholder feedback received on Draft 1, outlined in the comment summary. Stakeholders are invited to review these documents and submit comments via email to displays@energystar.gov by Friday, October 14, 2011.
EPA hosted a webinar on June 22 to discuss proposed changes to the Test Method and receive comments on applying IEC 62087 to test all display products. Incorporating stakeholder feedback, EPA released a revised test method, and accompanying documents, for Draft 1 of the Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Display Product Specification. As part of Phase 2 of the comment period, EPA would like to assemble a dataset according to this test method to analyze the energy performance of Display products which will be used to establish future eligibility criteria.
Phase 2 - Submit all test data and comments on the revised draft specification (through July 18, 2011): EPA will consider all test data and comments on the proposed edits in the Draft 1 specification and test method in its analysis for Draft 2. EPA will also propose performance levels for all product types/sizes in Draft 2.
Data and comments submitted to displays@energystar.gov by July 18, 2011 will be considered.
EPA released the Draft 1 Version 6.0 ENERGY STAR Displays Specification and Test Method on June 3, 2011. As a result of the proposed adoption of the IEC 62087 standard for testing displays less than 30 inches in diagonal size, EPA is dividing the comment period into two phases.
Phase 1 - Request clarification or guidance on applying IEC 62087 to test all display products (through June 14, 2011): EPA will redistribute an updated test method incorporating any clarifications with an accompanying data assembly form soon after the June 14 deadline.
Phase 2 - Submit all test data and comments on the proposed draft specification (through July 18, 2011): EPA will consider all test data and comments on the proposed edits in the Draft 1 specification in its analysis for Draft 2. EPA will also propose performance levels for all product types/sizes in the Draft 2 specification.
All feedback should be submitted to displays@energystar.gov by the respective dates above for Phase 1 and Phase 2.
EPA hosted a webinar to discuss topics that will be addressed during the specification revision and to solicit comments on the discussion topics published in December 2010.
