The Version 1.0 ENERGY STAR specification for Data Center Storage has been finalized and will take effect on December 2, 2013. Materials related to the revision process are provided below. EPA developed a memorandum explaining the potential use of an industry developed Best Foot Forward (BFF) approach to categorizing product families and configurations in data center storage systems. This document summarizes the benefits of BFF, as well as additional considerations that must be addressed to meet the goals of the ENERGY STAR program.

The U.S. Environmental Production Agency (EPA) would like to invite interested parties to test the energy performance of storage products that are currently being considered for inclusion in the Version 1.0 ENERGY STAR Data Center Storage specification. Please review the attached cover letter, data collection procedure, and test data collection sheet for further information. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit test data via e-mail to storage@energystar.gov no later than Friday, February 12, 2009.
On November 3, 2009, EPA distributed the following first draft data collection procedure and data sheet for stakeholder review and comment. Stakeholders are welcome to submit comments to storage@energystar.gov no later than December 4, 2009.
On Thursday, October 15, 2009, the US EPA hosted a working session to discuss test procedures and plans for preliminary testing of data center storage products. Several industry representatives presented their perspectives on energy efficiency test procedures for storage. Stakeholders are welcome to submit comments and proposals to storage@energystar.gov.
