Close the fireplace damper
Close the flue damper tightly when not in use. Otherwise, you are wasting energy and money on warmed or cooled air that can easily escape from the house. Even if there is no fire in the fireplace, there can still be a draft up the chimney. Closing the chimney damper will stop the flow of warm air upwards and keep it in the living space where it belongs.
