Seal and Insulate Key Product Criteria
Requirement | Current Criteria |
---|---|
Minimum R-value | ≥ R-3.0 in the thicknesses in which they are sold to consumers |
Smoke Burning Characteristics | Insulation product/product family must demonstrate the surface burning characteristics of flame-spread index and smoke-development index as required by the most current International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC). |
The current ENERGY STAR criteria for insulation products became effective March 2013.
Test Method for ENERGY STAR Certified Insulation
Depending on product type, ENERGY STAR insulation (Seal & Insulate) certification requires use of the test methods listed below:
Requirement | Product Type | Test Method |
---|---|---|
R-value | Insulation Product | ASTM C 177 Or ASTM C 518 Or ASTM C 1363 Or ASTM C |
Reflective Insulation (Single Sheet System) | ASTM E 408 Or ASTM C 1371 | |
Reflective Insulation (Multiple Sheet System) | ASTM C 1363 | |
Insulation with Reflective Facing | Test the system, with its air space, under ASTM C 1363 Or Add up the tested R-value of the material and the R-value of the air space | |
Surface Burning Characteristics | Flame Spread and Smoke-Development Indices | ASTM E 84 Or UL 723 Or CAN/ULC S102.2 |
