DC Chargers Earn the ENERGY STAR
Accelerating Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption and energy efficient EV charging is a priority in the movement toward a clean energy future, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program is working to aid drivers in making this technology highly efficient and readily accessible. EPA recently finalized Version 1.1 for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), expanding the scope of the ENERGY STAR EVSE specification to include DC charging products.
This updated specification establishes requirements to recognize the most efficient DC-output products. DC (or direct current chargers), allow for faster charging than commonly used AC chargers. Due to the potential for DC chargers to increase the range of EVs and the efforts to establish EV charging corridors for cross-country EV transportation, there has been an increase in demand for this product type. Adding DC charging stations to the ENERGY STAR scope will aid in increasing the adoption of electric vehicle technology and assist the country in combating climate change.
EPA will be working with several large states, including California and New York as well as electric utilities to specify and install ENERGY STAR certified DC Fast Chargers. Learn more here:
