Why ENERGY STAR?

Medical imaging equipment products are a broad category of products that encompass some of the largest plug loads in a hospital or out-patient facility. Medical imaging equipment including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, x-ray, nuclear imaging, computed tomography (CT), and ultrasound imagery. These products are essential to many hospitals and clinics but have a large energy cost.

Many MRI devices are eligible for the ENEGY STAR label, including low-helium products, allowing customers to purchase efficient products for their needs. ENERGY STAR certified MRI products can reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills through power management, both during the office day as well as during overnight periods. Purchasing an ENERGY STAR certified MRI could lower annual electric bills by as much as $3,350 per unit, plus additional savings from ancillary systems.

  • Low Helium Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Products Potentially Eligible in the Future

What should I look for when buying medical imaging equipment?

Purchasing ENERGY STAR certified medical imaging equipment will help reduce medical facilities costly energy bills, while continuing to ensure high quality patient care.

Take into consideration how you use your MRI equipment. Each facility will likely have slightly different operating hours and non-operating hours, which will impact how deep the product can go to sleep, which impacts the total savings amount. In addition, the customer will determine what the non-operating hours are, and you should work with your vendor to ensure that you have a process in place to put the device to sleep at the end of the day to maximize the potential savings. Further information may be found here.
