ENERGY STAR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

How does saving energy help protect the climate? When we use electricity in our homes, chances are a power plant somewhere is burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil, or natural gas) to produce that power. This creates greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Did you know that the average home can cause twice the carbon pollution as the average car? By using less energy in our homes, we can reduce the amount of fossil fuels being burned, which means fewer greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere that contribute to climate change.

Climate change is a real and urgent challenge affecting people and the environment worldwide.  Climate change has already led to rising sea levels, melting glaciers and shifting rainfall patterns.  Unchecked, carbon pollution can lead to long-lasting changes in our climate that threaten human health, society and ecosystems.  To learn more about climate change and what you can do to reduce its impacts, go to www.epa.gov/climatechange.
