Are you looking to save money and energy, but not sure where to begin? You can use ENERGY STAR’s Best Value Finder tool, accessible on your smartphone, tablet or computer. It is your resource for smart savings all in one place. Use the tool to research efficient products for your home, at prices that won’t break the bank.

The ENERGY STAR Best Value Finder can be used to research products from refrigerators to light bulbs, helping you find exactly what you need at a price that works for your wallet. For example, if your room air conditioner breaks down and your family needs a new one ASAP, the ENERGY STAR Best Value Finder can help you get started with your search. On the Room Air Conditioner results page, you will see products sorted by price, from lowest to highest. On the left-hand side of your screen, you can filter the results to identify products that best suit your needs.

Let’s walk through how one family in Chicago might use the tool. The Smith family of five is looking for a window AC to place in the 200 square foot living room of their apartment. The Best Value Finder tool offers several filters to help the Smith family find the perfect room AC.

  • Type of Room AC Needed: First, the Smiths indicate that they’ll be installing the room AC in a Window. This is the more common arrangement for most people.
  • Cooling Capacity: Next, they check off which Cooling Capacity they need. Cooling Capacity is measured in BTUs per hour. Bear in mind that bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to keeping your home comfortably cool.
    • If you’re not sure which capacity is recommended for your room size, our buying guidance can help.
    • The Smiths have a 200 square foot room, so they start at a recommended capacity of 6,000 BTUs. Since five people regularly spend time in the living room, they adjust the capacity upwards a bit to 7,200 BTUs, and then round down to the nearest thousand, landing at 7,000 BTUs. They check the box to look for 6,000-7,999 BTU units.

After checking off items in the Additional Features and Brand Name filters, the results page updates to show the Smiths a listing of ENERGY STAR certified models suited for their space, priced from lowest to highest. They can now click on each model to see local retailers, and options for online shopping, too.

Looking for extra savings? ENERGY STAR Best Value Finder will also tell you if your purchase may qualify for a rebate from your utility company. The Smiths, for example, may be eligible to receive a $25 mail-in rebate from ComEd with the purchase of their new ENERGY STAR certified Room AC.

So what are you waiting for? Try using the ENERGY STAR Best Value Finder tool to make the cool choice for Room AC – at a great price!
