Whether you're watching a whole season of your favorite TV show or just catching up on current movie releases streaming over the Internet is a popular trend, but how you stream can affect your energy use.

Do you stream through a game console? If so you're using up to ten times more power than streaming on a laptop or tablet. These devices use the least amount of power for streaming and are your best bet if you're using some other kind of device like a Blu ray player, cable box, or a smart TV.

Make sure all of your equipment has earned EPA's Energy STAR. These combinations will use 25 to 30 percent less energy than standard equipment. For example streaming using a standard cable box, modem, and TV uses over 30 watts more power than models that have earned the ENERGY STAR.
