Ever since the launch of Version 3 in 2010, the HVAC design and commissioning requirements have been the biggest hurdle between a standard HERS rating and an ENERGY STAR certified home. Taking all the lessons learned, EPA, RESNET, and ACCA are finishing work on a new HVAC grading standard that will integrate many of these requirements into the HERS rating process. This webinar, presented on August 26, 2020, provides an overview of the standard, how it will be integrated into the ENERGY STAR program, and a status update on when it can be used. To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must be certified under Version 3 of the program requirements, unless it is located within a U.S. state or territory utilizing a regional specification. Working with a Home Energy Rater, builders configure the preferred set of energy measures for their home and verify that the resulting Energy Rating Index meets or exceeds the ENERGY STAR Energy Rating Index Target. The National Program Requirements contain more information about how the target is defined and the typical measures used to meet this target.
This document defines how to configure the ENERGY STAR Reference Design Home and calculate the associated Energy Rating Index value for homes located in Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands.

Whole-house mechanical ventilation plays a critical role in the ENERGY STAR Single-Family New Homes program. It helps ensure that efficiency is not achieved by sacrificing indoor air quality. Delivering an effective system is a three-step process that involves the HVAC designer, the HVAC contractor or electrician, and the Rater. This technical bulletin is designed to reinforce the responsibilities of each party with regards to the whole-house ventilation airflow rate.
