ENERGY STAR Verification Testing by Product Category

At the beginning of the calendar year, EPA provides certification bodies (CBs) with nominations for verification testing in each category. Agency nominations may comprise up to half of the CB’s total testing responsibility in each category, while the remainder shall be selected randomly by the CB. Total unique models tested within a product category must meet the minimum requirement according to the percentages below.
A minimum of 10% of unique models:
- Boilers
- Ceiling Fans (lighting components do not need to be verified)
- Air-Source Heat Pumps
- Clothes Dryers
- Clothes Washers
- Commercial Boilers
- Commercial Coffee Brewers
- Commercial Dishwashers
- Commercial Electric Cooktops
- Commercial Fryers
- Commercial Griddles
- Commercial Hot Food Holding Cabinets
- Commercial Ice Machines
- Commercial Ovens
- Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers
- Commercial Steam Cookers
- Commercial Water Heaters
- Connected Thermostats
- Consumer Refrigeration
- Decorative Light Strings (10% of each partner’s unique models are to be verified)
- Dehumidifiers
- Downlights
- Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) – Level 2 AC
- Furnaces
- Geothermal Heat Pumps
- Light Commercial HVAC
- Non-solar Water Heaters
- Pool Pumps
- Residential Electric Cooking Products
- Residential Dishwashers
- Room Air Cleaners
- Room Air Conditioners

A minimum of 5% of unique models:

- Computer Servers
- Displays
- Imaging Equipment
- Lab Grade Refrigerators and Freezers
- Telephony
- Televisions
- Uninterruptible Power Supplies
- Windows, Doors, and Skylights
For select commercial food service categories, CBs administer a component inspection method as an alternative to verification testing for eligible ENERGY STAR partners. Please refer to ENERGY STAR Directive 2019-02, Component Inspection of ENERGY STAR® Commercial Food Service Products for additional information about the component inspection method. Please note that for all commercial food service categories, CBs should test no more than 10% of a partner’s unique certified models for verification testing per product category.
