ENERGY STAR and Connected Water Heaters

On March 20, 2018, Abigail Daken, from EPA, held in-depth discussions with stakeholders regarding the future of connected water heaters. The session was held in conjunction with the ACEEE Hot Water Forum in Portland, OR.

This free session was open to the public and included presentations and guided discussions addressing relevant issues, including the following:

  • The potential of heat pump water heaters for load shifting.
  • Comparison between current connected specifications for water heaters and EPA’s customary connected criteria, as expressed in other product categories.
  • Architectures of and standards for connection to residential products.
  • The special considerations for rural areas and others with limited broadband service.
  • Relationship between criteria designed for high efficiency water heaters and those in use to control electric resistance products.
