Celebrate Reading the Green Way
“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” ― Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss is famous for many things - the wacky haired Thing 1 and Thing 2, the Cat in the Hat, and making reading fun – just to name a few. So it’s no surprise that the National Education Association celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday every year with the largest reading event in the United States. Read Across America is an initiative that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. So in honor of Read Across America Day – and Dr. Seuss, we’re celebrating one of our favorite stories, The Lorax.
"UNLESS someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not." – Dr. Seuss
Generations of readers have grown up with the Lorax – the loveable curmudgeon who speaks for the trees. And while Dr. Seuss’ cautionary tale is bleak at times, his powerful message coupled with whimsical rhymes and illustrations, has been inspiring environmentalists since 1971.
You can even pair this classic with our new and improved Lorax Activity Book, which is full of fun ways for kids to learn about protecting the environment. This book features a water crossword puzzle, a planet-saving word search, a maze, a fun-with-saving match game, a fill-in-the-blank poem, and an I-Spy style activity. Plus the activity book includes illustrations from The Lorax and Seussian-style rhymes chock full of tips and tricks to help us reduce, reuse, and recycle. To download or order free copies, visit the ENERGY STAR publications page.
And if you have a class or group of kids ready to be Lorax helpers, order a free copy of the Lorax Helper Checklist poster. It’s a perfect activity for Earth Day. Although in our world, every day is Earth Day!
