According to a recent study, 90% of single-family homes in the U.S. are under insulated. To combat leaky homes across America, EPA's ENERGY STAR program is inviting you to Rule Your Attic! Let us help you find ways to save money on energy bills, increase the comfort of your home, and reduce the pollution that contributes to climate change. Did you know, properly sealing and insulating your home can save you up to $200 a year? Your attic is a great place to start!
Throughout the fall, EPA has been telling the world about the Rule Your Attic! campaign, and even held an Ask the Expert style Twitter Party on November 5th. Using the #RuleYourAttic hashtag, participants tweeted sealing and insulation questions to EPA experts. Below is a snapshot of the party:
Question: How can we keep the air from coming in around the door?
-
Answer: Look for weather stripping at your local hardware store; it’s an easy #DIY. The bottom might need an airtight door sweep.
Question: What's the best way to make sure the windows are insulated?
-
Answer: Low cost way is to add caulk around outer window frames and use shrink-to-fit window film to stop drafts.
Question: What is the best type of insulation for PVC water pipes?
-
Answer: Insulate hot water pipes with foam or fiberglass tubes to save water heater energy.
Question: How do we know if we have enough insulation in the attic and around the windows?
-
Answer: Recommended insulation levels depend on where you live and how much you have now. View the image below and visit the Rule Your Attic landing page.
