Energy Management Training from the Industrial Assistance Network
ENERGY STAR’s Industrial Assistance Network (IAN) provides manufacturers with training to help them achieve energy and cost savings, increase competitiveness, and reduce energy waste in manufacturing operations. Students are taught to manage energy, identify savings, and become familiar with helpful tools that can improve a facility’s energy performance.
There is no charge to participate in the training. All sessions are held live, online and are designed to be interactive.
What will I learn?
Manufacturers learn strategies to maintain and grow strong energy management practices in their operations. Students will gain skills that broaden their professional credentials and help them build and sustain energy and cost savings where they work.
The training begins with an overview of the importance of energy efficiency in manufacturing. Next, it teaches the three most vital steps of energy management: measuring, tracking, and benchmarking plant energy use to assess a facility’s energy performance and set goals.
To build a foundation for improving a facility’s energy performance, the training teaches students the value and “how to” of forming an energy team and generating enthusiasm for energy management across an organization to form a strong culture of continuous improvement.
Students learn how to identify energy savings through Energy Treasure Hunts. But, managing energy does not stop once energy savings have been found. The training continues through instruction on creating an action plan to implement these energy projects. Next up, classes learn about opportunities to earn ENERGY STAR recognition for energy efficiency improvements. Finally, the training demonstrates how energy efficiency can help companies lower the embodied carbon of products.
What are the course expectations?
To obtain a Certificate of Successful Completion and realize the full benefit of the training, students are expected to attend all eight sessions and complete post-session assignments. The post-session assignments reinforce what is learned during each training session. Each assignment enables students to apply the essential steps directly to building their energy program.
ENERGY STAR provides help to students to apply what they are learning. Additional “office hour” sessions are hosted by the ENERGY STAR Team’s experienced industrial energy managers. These experts are available to answer questions and provide assistance on energy management topics that students encounter.
When is the next training?
The next training starts soon! Sign up now to secure your spot in one of the next training groups starting in October or January. All training sessions are offered on multiple dates and times to allow students to select the option that works best for their schedules.

I am not a manufacturer, but I would like to promote the IANs
State and local governments and regional organizations that serve manufacturers are welcome to promote the IAN training to manufacturers in their networks. The IAN training program can advance workforce skills and help industry stay competitive in your area. It can also complement more individualized services that your organization may offer. If you would like to work with EPA to promote the IAN training in your area, please contact energystrategy@energystar.gov.
