Increasing the visibility of energy management & sustainability goals

BD logo

BD (Becton Dickinson) is a medical technology company that serves healthcare institutions, life science, researchers, clinical laboratories, industry and the general public. BD manufactures and sells a broad range of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment and diagnostic products.

In 2010 BD established its 2015 Sustainability Strategy. As part their strategy to improve energy performance, the BD energy steering committee was exploring new ways to engage associates and challenge their organization. The ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry provided just what BD needed to increase awareness of the company's sustainability targets and to accelerate energy reduction activities. In late 2010, BD enrolled several manufacturing locations in the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry. By early 2012, BD’s first location had achieved the Challenge, reducing energy intensity by more than ten percent.

As of 2015 twenty-two BD locations have joined the ENERGY STAR Challenge, and to date, 13 have achieved the Challenge. The average energy intensity reduction for the locations which have met the Challenge is 18 percent.

“Participation in the Challenge enables us to publicly demonstrate our commitment to the environment, supporting our company purpose of 'helping all people live healthy lives'. The Challenge is an invaluable mechanism for recognizing great performance and is highly sought after throughout our organization," said Travis Anderton, Global Director, Sustainability and Property Protection.

BD’s achiever sites have an average of 17.9% reduction in energy intensity.
