Suwannee American Cement, LLC (SAC) began producing Portland cement for the local Florida construction market in February 2003. SAC is a partnership between Anderson Columbia Company and Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA). VCNA with its decades of experience in the industry and valuable technical resources is committed to operating the safest and most environmentally friendly plants in the world, and is afounding member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) which seeks to operate and expand the cement industry in a sustainable manner. SAC is the first plant within VCNA to win triple certification. Within 18 months of coming into operation, the plant has received ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) certification, and OHSAS 18001 (Safety) certification. SAC first became an ENERGY STAR? Partner in 2007, and in 2008 SAC achieved its second consecutive ENERGY STAR Label with an energy performance score of 100 while operating its plant with a benchmark total energy output of 4.21 mMBtu/ston of clinker.

Suwannee American Cement achieved these results through focused energy management and projects aimed at
reducing energy consumption. Some identifiable projects SAC undertook were: identification and automation of conveyance equipment to reduce operation of this equipment during periods when material is not being conveyed, also simple solutions like finding and fixing air leaks in equipment, modified material handling practices to eliminate the use of an air heater used to pre-dry raw materials for grinding, conducted motor efficiency analysis to determine which motors could benefit from installation of variable frequency drives (VFD) and installed VFDs on identified motors. All of these efforts were undertaken over the two years following SACs commitment to become an ENERGY STAR Partner, and can be attributed to the energy performance improvements achieved.
