The Buildings Technology Center Headquarters building at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is similar to much of today's 12pt office building construction. It's energy use, however, is anything but typical. Outperforming over 90% of the office buildings across the nation according to it's ENERGY STAR? rating, it is a model of what can be achieved with efficient lighting, control systems, and attention to detail in operations.
Constructed in 1985, the all-electric, 12,000 square foot building contains approximately 60 occupants and sizeable internal loads from people, personal computers, and office equipment. An energy management system was installed at construction and the original inefficient lighting was converted to T-8 technology with occupancy sensors in 1994. The HVAC systems, however, a combination of 3 central and 46 package through-the-wall terminal units, are of low-to-moderate efficiencies typical of most installations in the mid-80's.
In addition to the 20% total building energy use reduction achieved by the lighting upgrade, the attention to detail the center has taken in operating the energy management system has allowed the Buildings Technology Center, who's staff specializes in energy efficiency expertise, to "talk the talk and walk the walk" in terms of it's own in-house building energy performance.
The Buildings Technology Center is a premier U.S. research facility devoted to the development of technologies that improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of residential and commercial buildings. Established by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technologies, the center is a "National User Facility " with facilities that are available to manufacturers, universities, and other organizations for both proprietary and non-proprietary research and development. The center's core strengths are in Building Envelope Systems and Materials, Heating and Cooling Technologies, Building Design and Performance, Power Systems, and Technology Transfer.
