The Verizon Wireless Twinsburg, OH Data center is a purpose built, mission critical enterprise data center that was designed for operational resiliency, maintainability, and energy efficiency. The facility, which opened in 2011, has been certified Tier III by the Uptime Institute and LEED Gold by the US Green Building Council. The primary building function is the approximately 63,000-square-foot raised floor computer room. The balance of the overall 144,000 square feet provides mechanical, electrical, and operational support to the computer room.
The facility was designed to be modular, scalable, and flexible. With an ultimate computer room capacity of 9.6 MW, the design provides the capability of adding UPS systems, mechanical cooling equipment, and standby generators on an as-needed basis as the computer room demand grows. This approach not only minimizes first costs, but allows the facility to operate more efficiently. The facility power utilization effectiveness (PUE) currently ranges from 1.35 to 1.55.
Mechanical equipment was selected to maximize efficiency. The chilled water cooling system operates at an elevated 58 degrees, increasing both equipment efficiency and the number of hours available for economizer free cooling. All HVAC pumps and fans utilize variable frequency drives, and an extensive building automation system optimizes their performance and efficiency during all phases of growth.
Beyond the basic energy savings, the environmental impact of the facility was also considered. A chemical-free water treatment system for the chiller condenser water system eliminates several million gallons of condenser makeup water and thousands of gallons of industrial chlorine use annually. A rainwater collection cistern reduces the condenser makeup water consumption even further. A snowmelt system, which utilizes waste heat reclaimed from the computer rooms, reduces the use of chemical deicers.
