Federal Reserve Plaza is a Class A office tower consisting of a 33-story high rise and a 4-story low rise, encompassing a total of 1,078,903 square feet of floor space. The building is owned and managed by its primary occupant, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Two-thirds of the building is occupied by the Federal Reserve Bank, and the remaining one-third is occupied by commercial office tenants. The tower portion of the building includes 27 floors of open office space. The building is positioned as an anchor to Boston?s Financial District and enjoys spectacular views of Boston Harbor and Logan Airport. The building sits on a one-block, 5.7-acre plot in the South Station area, one of the two major public transportation centers in downtown Boston.


Federal Reserve Plaza proudly boasts the most ?green space? of any high rise building in the city, including one of the oldest and most renowned roof gardens, more than 150 shade trees, and nearly 100 species of flowers and shrubs. As the gateway to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, the building provides a pedestrian friendly garden for all to enjoy.


The building was designed by Hugh Stubbins & Associates. Construction of the building began in 1972, and since its opening in 1978, it has long been a prominent Boston landmark, immediately recognizable with its ?wash board? appearance and aluminum facade. At a time when energy efficiency was not a priority, Hugh Stubbins, the building?s architect, possessed the foresight to incorporate energy conservation characteristics into the design. The wash board facade of the building reduces energy use by taking advantage of seasonal sun loads in the winter and providing shade in the summer.


In addition to having an energy-friendly design, the building has a management team focused on implementing practices that promote energy efficiency and sustainability by effectively managing environmental risks, energy conservation, and sustainable strategies.


Federal Reserve Plaza has earned recognition by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) as a 2009 Office Building of the Year recipient and as a 2010 Earth Award recipient. The building also earned U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification in 2010 along with BOMA?s 360 designation.
