Klondike Elementary School has served the community for more than 53 years (first as a high school and now as an elementary school) and is one of Tippecanoe School Corporation's (TSC's) 17 schools that partnered with ENERGY STAR in 2007. As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, the school has installed KVAR energy controllers and is supported by a "Green Team" consisting of student volunteers and a faculty advisor that is committed to good stewardship of our natural resources and an educational environment for students that models and teaches responsible waste reduction and recycling.

 

The energy management program at Klondike Elementary supports the district's commitment to providing the high quality educational programs that its students deserve. Established in 1996, the program provides a complex, highly structured, people-oriented strategy for the district. TSC improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its buildings. Through commitment, changed behavior patterns, and careful ongoing auditing, the district has saved more than $14 million (38 percent) in annual energy bills over a 12.5 year period and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 115,611 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the emissions from 20,751 cars, or 2,957,109 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

 

To qualify for the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance, TSC took the following actions:

?         1996: TSC Board of Trustees was proactive in hiring an Energy Manager (Sequoyah Bible) for the district and a consulting firm (Energy Education), which implemented its people-oriented Transformational Energy Management Process. Also in 1996, the district, in collaboration with Energy Education, established energy guidelines that enabled every staff member, student, and patron to make a difference in conserving energy and help be good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

 

?         2007: TSC makes a commitment to take the ENERGY STAR Challenge.

 

?         2008: Sixteen TSC schools earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.

 

?         2009: An additional TSC school is awarded the ENERGY STAR.

 

2009 - present: TSC continues energy awareness by implementing hedging strategies for historic cost, maintaining an energy efficiency ethic, and being proactive toward alternative energy (including installing solar panels at Harrison High School in 2008 and a wind turbine at Mintonye Elementary in 2009, as well as installing KVAR energy controllers).

Communications:

Energy reports are developed monthly for administrators. An annual energy management report is provided for the School Board. An annual energy management update letter is provided to all TSC staff members, students, patrons, and facility users. Media contacts are made aware of the energy program progress at TSC. Visits to principals, custodians, cafeteria managers, teachers, and support staff are made on a monthly or as needed schedule to keep them informed, answer questions, and continue the energy ethic while promoting good stewardship. All interested people are invited to visit tscschools.net and click on Greening TSC to observe ongoing sustainability efforts with energy and environmental stewardship.
