Situated in the center of a sprawling 700-acre campus in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this 3-story, 126,000-square-foot glass and steel building serves as the corporate headquarters for Armstrong World Industries, the country's largest manufacturer of resilient and hardwood flooring and acoustical ceiling systems.

Constructed in 1998, the building houses 225 occupants and consolidates corporate staff that was originally scattered throughout three separate locations. It consists of two wings that are visually united in height and materials, but differ in the form of their facades. The east wing is curved while the west wing is rectilinear. A soaring, light-filled atrium unites the two wings. The atrium is a natural gathering place and facilitates interaction through wide, structural staircases that invite foot traffic.

In a building that contains so much glass, engineering and facility controls are critical to maintaining comfort for interior spaces. In this regard, the building is tied to campus-wide facilities management building automation software, allowing centralized and efficient cycle management. All HVAC equipment uses CFC-free refrigeration and is zoned to create smaller areas for climate control. 

An advanced HVAC system includes energy-efficient motors for all air handlers and pumps in the building, along with an Energy Management Control System (EMCS) to control the motor systems and space temperatures. The HVAC system also features variable speed drives on all fans and pumps to reduce energy usage during part-load/non-occupied periods, and the use of variable air volume (VAV) boxes and controls in all heated and cooled spaces. 

The building's shallow floorplate allows natural light deep into the building.  Exterior sunshades ensure that summer sunlight does not overheat the interior and drive up cooling requirements, while interior light shelves increase light and heat in cooler seasons. 

Occupancy sensors control space lighting as well as VAV box operation when spaces are occupied. Dual level lighting further minimizes the use of artificial light and related heat gains. Integrated control systems interface with lighting systems through outdoor photocells and timer functions to reduce overall energy consumption.

Direct/indirect lighting systems utilize energy-efficient fixtures, including T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts in all office work spaces. Uplighting applications take advantage of the Armstrong high light reflectance ceiling panels used throughout the work spaces.

The application of energy measurement devices provides continuous feedback on building performance compared to building specifications.
