Milltown Primary School was the first school in New Jersey to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. Located in Bridgewater, NJ, the school is part of the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District (BRRSD), the largest district in Somerset County with more than 9,000 students attending 11 different schools. BRRSD is the only district in New Jersey to be recognized as an ENERGY STAR Leader for achieving a 10-percent improvement in energy efficiency across its portfolio of buildings.

Despite being designed to achieve certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, the school scored a 52 on EPA's energy performance scale the first time its energy use was benchmarked in Portfolio Manager. Recognizing the need to take action, the district partnered with Schools for Energy EfficiencyTM (SEE) and became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2007. The energy management team enlisted everyone's assistance in the school--all staff, students and custodians--to use less energy by turning off lights, computer monitors, and other electronic devices when not in use.

Staff and students at every building work to reduce their energy consumption every day. Many people in the district felt that the LEED-designed Milltown School had a special advantage because it was a new building, with lighting sensors, digitally controlled boilers, and a sophisticated energy management system. By benchmarking its energy use in Portfolio Manager, the energy management team realized that a building designed to be efficient is only successful if it is also operated with efficiency in mind. The building operators at Milltown worked very hard to run the building more efficiently and implement a number of low-and no-cost operational and behavioral strategies to reduce energy use.

The building has a group of students, called the SEE Squad, who make regular building sweeps to make sure people are turning off lights and monitors when they are not in use. Plug loads add a significant amount of energy use to a school, but they can be managed, and the SEE Squad helps by leaving friendly "Oops" post-its when something needs to be turned off or a "WOW" post-it when others are getting the message about energy use.

After 2 years of monitoring and tracking energy consumption, the district has saved more than $780,000 by reducing its electric consumption by 3.8 million Kwh and its natural gas by 129,000 therms. With energy costs rising, energy efficiency has become an important part of operating a successful school district. BRRSD remains committed to saving money and fighting global warming by improving its energy efficiency.

Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District promotes its energy-saving strategies and successes through e-mail newsletters, visual reminders, Web site information, committee meetings, assemblies and school clubs. One school has a "Blackout Day" to explore how electricity is used in the classroom.

"Milltown Primary School is setting a positive example as the first school in the state and the first school in the district to earn this award. We are proud to be recognized as an environmentally conscious school, and proud of the enthusiastic response of our students and staff in making that possible."

-- Matthew Lembo, Principal, Milltown Primary School
