Croft Community Elementary opened in the fall of 2008 as a single-floor facility totaling 77,881 square feet. It has eight rooftop air conditioning units, two condensing boilers, and variable air-volume terminal units in most of the building. Two units are constant volume.

The facility was designed to meet 2008 energy codes. Windows were situated to take advantage of daylighting, and transoms further enhanced the natural light. Fluorescent fixtures were used throughout the facility, including the multi-purpose area. The lighting is T-8 bulbs with dual switching between one and two bulbs.

The school reduced its energy use by 13.5 percent in its second year of operation by adjusting the operational hours as we became more familiar with the building, and by conversing with staff and students about how they can help conserve energy without impeding the school's function.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education continues to raise energy-consumption awareness and to use that awareness to reduce energy consumption.
