Allegiance Health, located in South Central Michigan, is a community-owned, not-for-profit, integrated health system with more than 40 sites of care. Allegiance employs 350 medical staff members and 3,700 staff members, and also has 475 licensed beds, 700 volunteers, and a community-wide electronic health record. The health system provides the full spectrum of primary through tertiary care. Through its Health Improvement Organization, Allegiance has gained national recognition for excellence in wellness and prevention services, including the American Hospital Association?s Foster G. McGaw Prize for community service, awarded to one health care organization in the country per year. Allegiance Health is also the recipient of numerous national honors for clinical excellence, including: five-time recipient of the Thomson Reuters ?100 Top Hospital? award; 2012 ?Most Wired Hospital? award from H&HN Magazine; Primary Stroke Center Certification from JCAHO; Practice Greenhealth Environmental Leadership Award; and Healthgrades? Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, Patient Safety Excellence Award, and Emergency Medicine Excellence Award.


Lighting: The entire Allegiance Health campus has been outfitted with T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts. In renovated areas, T-5 fixtures and, in some areas, LED troffer lighting has been installed. Exit signs have been upgraded to LED lighting, as well as the main building sign on the Anderson Building. Automatic lighting controls have been installed at the main hospital, and plans are in place to do the same in the Anderson Building. Daylight control for lighting in the garage was included in the design and construction phases.


Fan and Pump Systems: When new motors and pumps are required, Allegiance purchases more efficient types of equipment. This approach has included the installation of new variable frequency drives (VFDs) on fan motors and pumping systems. The maintenance staff, along with construction services, is encouraged to replace equipment with higher efficiency alternatives.


Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC): The main hospital upgraded its chillers and boilers to more energy-efficient models. The main cooling towers were just recently renovated to a more energy-efficient design, which has proven to lower electrical consumption and reduced the need for make-up water. A new system called ?The Green Machine? was installed on the facility?s cooling tower at the Anderson Building. This machine eliminates the need for most water treating chemicals for these systems and has proven so valuable that the same device will also be installed on the cooling towers in the main hospital.


The facility?s HVAC systems are maintained on a regular basis by in-house trades where possible in order to ensure the best operation. Allegiance Health has aggressively pursued educating staff members on energy-efficient practices.


Each year on Earth Day, the Allegiance Energy Committee displays energy reduction projects that were completed during the past year. Allegiance Health also features certain vendors to display energy reducing products that could be used not only at work, but at home as well. One of the popular portions of this event is the CFL and tree seedling that is given to employees to take home.
