Located north of downtown Atlanta in Fulton County Georgia, Central Park is Cox Enterprises, Inc.?s corporate headquarters. Constructed in 2001, this 16-story, multi-purpose commercial building provides office space for 1,150 employees; hosted more than 59,900 meeting attendees in its main conference centers and rooms in 2010; and offers employees the benefits of a full service fitness center and cafeteria. The facility also has a more than 7,100-square-foot data center.
The facility?s management prioritizes designing, constructing and operating an energy-efficient facility, beginning with the selection of the design team and later, hiring skilled individuals to oversee the operation of the facility. Initial design included specification of high efficiency chillers coupled with a water-side economizer; a central energy management system; T-8 direct/indirect light fixtures; and occupancy sensors to control light fixtures in individual offices and conference rooms. Over the past decade, the operation and energy management teams have continually strived to improve the energy performance of the building. During that time, they have employed the following measures:
-- Implemented an air-handler unit supply air temperature reset and a supply air static pressure reset
-- Adjusted the controls for the secondary chilled water pumps
-- Installed occupancy sensors to reduce light levels in stair wells when there is no activity
-- Installed occupancy sensors in networking rooms, electrical and mechanical rooms, janitorial closets, and elevator lobbies
-- Replaced halogen light fixtures with LED light fixtures
-- Replaced incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps
-- Reduced lighting on the upper level parking deck by 60 percent when there is no activity
-- Replaced the natural gas water heater
The building management team has also implemented other environmentally friendly measures. Retired and obsolete electronic equipment is recycled through the company?s eCycling program, which also accepts employees? personal electronics. Conventional urinals were replaced with water-free urinals. Bio-degradable flatware, cups, and plates are used in the cafeteria, and the janitorial staff members use green cleaning supplies. Lastly, recycle bins are placed at each desk for multiple materials rather than just paper.
Through the Cox Conserves program, the company promotes sustainability initiatives and provides tips to employees that protect the environment and conserve natural resources.
