The Foley Square Federal Office Building at 290 Broadway in New York City opened in 1994 and was designed to be among the most energy efficient buildings in its class. Due to the diligence of the General Services Administration (GSA) project team, the building has met the objectives of the project team and recently achieved status as an ENERGY STAR Building.
Located in downtown Manhattan, the Foley Square Federal Office Building is thirty stories tall and contains 1.2 million gross square feet. The building houses the Environmental Protection Agency, Internal Revenue Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Working with the local utility company and the building developer, much of the success of the Foley Square Federal Office Building is due to GSA project team which demonstrated that energy efficient buildings can be developed by the Federal Government within Federal guidelines and budgets using off-the-shelf technology.
The equipment and products implemented throughout the building have enabled GSA to realize an annual cost savings of $1.3 million compared to a building without such equipment and products. Some of the most notable energy efficient and cost effective equipment used in the building includes: a building energy management system, T-8 lighting fixtures, steam turbine centrifugal chillers, high efficiency motors, and a variable air volume (VAV) air handling system.
The Foley Square Federal Office Building has shown that the Federal Government can successfully reduce energy consumption and simultaneously provide better working conditions for its tenants. GSA is proud to have this building recognized as being among the nation's most energy efficient buildings and achieving distinction as an ENERGY STAR Building .
