In 2003, the building control system received the first major upgrade to its energy management and control system as well as upgrades to minor ventilation systems. These upgrades further enhanced the energy profile and occupant comfort. The upgrades included, a new digital control system, building pressure controls, building CO2 controls, outside airflow instrumentation, elevator shaft ventilation, new VFDs on return fans, web based work order and building data management system with 24/7 staffing, and a system of interactive kiosks throughout the building to provide system feedback to occupants. Upon completion of the work, the building was then re-commissioned to ensure that all existing and new equipment was operating to the engineer's specification and design.
As a result of these activities, the Department of Ecology Headquarters Building earned the ENERGY STAR in 2005.
Efforts to highlight the energy efficiency improvements made at the Department of Ecology Headquarters Building and the value of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program include the issuing of a press release on August 25, 2005, that was reported on by "The Daily Olympian" and "The Puget Sound Business Examiner."
