Built in 1912, the Bellingham Federal Building and US Post Office (the best surviving example of Renaissance Revival architecture in Bellingham, WA) effectively demonstrates the General Services Administration's commitment to preserving the United States' cultural treasures while implementing state-of-the-art building operations and maintenance.

The three-story building, entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, houses offices of the General Services Administration, the US Bankruptcy Courts, and a branch of the US Post Office.

To meet the federal governments goals of reduced energy use, several energy efficiency measures were implemented in the building that contributed to it being awarded the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings. These measures included the retrofitting of existing fluorescent fixtures with electronic ballast and T-8 fluorescent tubes, and the installation of an Energy Management System (EMS). In order to improve occupant comfort and indoor air quality, a building tune-up was performed. In addition, load reduction strategies were implemented to reduce the amount of heating, cooling, and electricity used. These energy efficiency initiatives cost approximately $230,000, providing energy cost savings of $45,000 annually. Thus, the project has a payback of approximately five years.
