Banner Estrella Medical Center
9201 W Thomas Road
Phoenix, AZ 85037
Banner Estrella Medical Center opened in 2005 in west Phoenix as a full-service, acute care hospital and a five-story medical office building on a 50-acre medical campus. The hospital is designed to provide a soothing, healing atmosphere for both patients and their family members. Hospital features include unlimited visiting hours for designated care partners, room-service meals for patients and visitors, premium movies, free Internet access, and interchangeable wall art.The facility employs state-of-the-art technology, such as electronic medical records and a computerized physician order entry system. These systems work together to reduce and eliminate medical errors.
Banner Estrella also offers state-of-the art technology such as iCare, a telemedicine program that provides an extra layer of monitoring for patients in intensive-care units. Banner Estrella's Maternity Services department uses an intelligent OB program to help reduce the chances of complications during labor and delivery.
Banner Estrella employs approximately 1,400 health care professionals and support staff members, and a medical team of more than 700 physicians who serve the rapidly growing West Valley communities of Avondale, Buckeye, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Surprise, Tolleson, and west Phoenix.
In 2008, Banner Estrella opened a sixth patient floor to meet the growing health care needs of the communities it serves. The $13.8 million project added 36 beds ? 12 beds dedicated to obstetric patients, and 24 beds shared among orthopedic, medical, and surgical patients. The expansion project increased the number of available patient beds at the hospital to more than 200.
Banner Estrella?s management team performed the following measures to achieve ENERGY STAR certification:
-- Installed occupancy sensors in operating rooms. These sensors allow the air change rates to drop to the code minimum when spaces are unoccupied. Reducing airflow thus reduces the fan energy and reheat energy occurring within the spaces while maintaining room temperature and positive pressure.
-- Eliminated or reduced airflows and turned off reheat to unoccupied rooms such as storage rooms, linen closets, communication rooms, and electrical rooms.
-- Eliminated reheat to spaces that require airflow but where temperatures are not critical. Looked at kitchen areas, soiled linen closets, and elevator rooms.
-- Implemented occupied/unoccupied schedules for the conference building, administrative offices, cafeteria, and various offices located throughout the hospital. The unoccupied supply air volumes are reduced by 90 percent.
-- Reduced airflow for HVAC boxes that are in re-heat more that 90 percent of the time.
-- Set chiller plant staging to maximize efficiency. This involves operating one more chiller than was previously run, and reducing the load on the individual chillers from 80-90 percent to 40-70 percent, a more efficient range for installed VFDs.
-- Set the condenser water set point down to 55?F from the present value of 65?F.
-- Reset the chilled water differential pressure set point based on feedback from the air handler and fan-coil unit chilled water valves.
Savings the first year totaled just over $140,000, making the return on investment less than one year.
-- Re-lamped the building using just over 14,000 T-8 lamps, which provide an annual savings of $65,000 or approximately 684,000 kilowatt hours.
-- Installed motion sensors and timers in areas that are not continuously occupied.
