A few of the energy efficiency measures incorporated into the Hewitt building were: a building automated control system (BAS) with direct digital controls (DDC) controls for the HVAC and lighting; motion detectors for the majority of work space lighting; a heat wheel system that pre-heats/cools fresh air using the exhaust air; and variable frequency drives (VFDs) on all air handler units.

In addition to these upgrades, adding VFDs to chillers, BAS upgrades, and more aggressive reduced run times in 2007 showed a savings of $50,000 over the same period of time from 2006. The addition of VFDs to cooling towers along with a new tower water temperature reset and more BAS upgrades in 2008 have made it possible to increase the building's energy performance rating to the top 25 percent in the nation, earning the Hewitt Associates building the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
Postings outlining energy initiatives and the ENERGY STAR Award will be placed on The Source, Hewitt's internal Web site, One Source, Jones Lang LaSalle's internal Web site, and the local chapter of BOMA. The plaque will be displayed in the client entrance to the building.
