Buffalo High School

Buffalo, MN 55313
Buffalo High School (BHS) has joined the ranks of six other schools in Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools to earn the ENERGY STAR, indicating that they are among the top 25 percent of facilities in the country for energy performance. BHS is located in Minnesota about 40 miles west of the Twin Cities. The school takes part in a district-wide commitment to reduce energy use and costs through their partnership with the Schools for Energy Efficiency? (SEE) program. Built in 1996, BHS is one of the newest buildings in the district and has proven that even with energy-efficient equipment, there are still ways to save on utility bills through behavior and operational changes.
Since 2004, BHS building engineers and custodians, as well as the staff and students, have found numerous ways to be more energy conscious, improving their energy efficiency by 17 percent on average and avoiding $330,812 in energy costs. The high school has posted an energy awareness campaign, educated science students through an energy bike activity, and encouraged media center staff to implement daily energy saving practices for computer classes. On the operations side, BHS did the following:
-- Delamped over-lit areas where there is natural daylight.
-- Added low-cost controls to more than 60 exhaust fans.
-- Installed motion sensors in all large bathrooms.
By tracking their building's energy use, BHS is able to continuously monitor its progress, motivating the school to work toward earning recognition from ENERGY STAR. An ENERGY STAR partner since 2005, the school district celebrated its achievement with a formal awards presentation and assembly and invited the community to visit their efficient facility. BHS staff was successful because of the energy-saving strategies they incorporated using ENERGY STAR and the SEE program.
-- Share energy-saving results with building engineers, school board, staff, and students.
-- Published article in BHS student newspaper and in the parent newsletter.
-- Published article in the district newsletter that is distributed to all district residents.
-- Distributed press release in the local area newspapers.
"Monitoring energy use is something all large facilities should do on a daily basis. With data and a good support team, you can implement minor changes that result in large savings. Add that to the partnerships with ENERGY STAR and the SEE program, it heightens the potential for all buildings to reduce energy consumption."-- Eric Hamilton, Director of Buildings & Grounds, Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools
