The redevelopment of GM Renaissance Center was the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The Center earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance as a result of extensive retrofitting and upgrading of the property's energy-consuming infrastructure. For example, four-lamp, T12 magnetic-ballast light fixtures were replaced with two-lamp, T8 electronic-ballast fixtures, and incandescent lamps in common areas were replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Automatic lighting controls were installed in some 75 percent of the office area of the property. Climate control was another focus of the retrofitting effort with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and high-efficiency motors installed on all of the property's major air-handling systems.
