State Farm Insurance? Corporate Headquarters is located in Bloomington, IL. In 1972, the facility was constructed with one 12-story building connected to two four-story buildings. Another two four-story buildings were added in 1987, bringing the total floor space to approximately 2 million square feet. The main office complex houses more than 4,600 insurance, bank, and general office employees. The property is managed by internal operations staff under State Farm Administrative Services.


In 1999, State Farm began using EPA's Portfolio Manager to track the energy performance of its major facilities. The company established an energy policy and improvement goals that balanced energy management with employee safety and the enterprise's business needs. Since the program's inception, Corporate Headquarters' energy performance score has risen dramatically, to an 83 in 2009. By scoring in the top 25 percent of similar buildings nationwide, the building earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2008. Overall, the facility has reduced annual electric usage more than 5 million kWh, and natural gas usage more than 200,000 therms since 2004.


To improve the energy performance of the Corporate Headquarters complex, the building staff, in consultation with in-house engineering support, implemented a multi-step process to identify and complete energy efficiency improvements.

Planning is one of the key aspects of a successful energy management program. Energy Conservation Workshops were held to gather ideas and best practices from the operations staff. In addition, an extensive whole-building review of facility systems and operations was conducted to identify potential projects. Projects were then prioritized based on cost savings and used to prepare a multi-year budget plan.

Projects having the most potential for efficiency gains were grouped into categories. Some of the lighting projects included retrofitting light fixtures to electronic ballasts and T-8 lamps; installing occupancy sensors in some restrooms and conference rooms; converting fixtures to CFL where appropriate; changing exit lights and directional signs to LED; installing day-lighting sensors in open public areas; and increasing the use of photocells.

Several projects provided for load reductions, such as installing window film on all windows and skylights to mitigate heat gain; replacing original outside air dampers with new high efficiency (HE) dampers; replacing CRT monitors with flat panel displays; using vending machine monitors and controls; upgrading to an automatic HVAC control system; removing kitchen steam kettles; installing revolving doors; reducing "vampire equipment"; and installing high-pressure fog humidifiers in lieu of steam humidifiers.

Heating and cooling was another project category with significant impact. Sample projects that were undertaken include installing new HE chillers and variable frequency drives (VFDs); installing new HE motors and drives for fans and pumps; automating cooling tower controls and drives; utilizing a flat plate heat exchanger during cold weather; installing high turn down burners in two boilers; installing a draft control in the boiler stack; replacing direct digital control (DDC) system pneumatic controls; replacing variable air volume (VAV) boxes with DDC boxes; rebalancing air systems as general work areas are reconfigured; upgrading the cooling tower water sand filter; and automating the reheat water reset control.

Energy management is an ongoing strategic effort at State Farm. The organization is committed to reducing energy waste in daily operations, and energy efficiency research continues in an effort to realize future improvement opportunities. Several of these studies include thermal storage tanks, chilled water flow, curtain wall renovation, and renewable energy.

In addition to mechanical upgrades and operational changes, State Farm also encourages personal responsibility through initiatives including a free bus ride program with the local transit authority, an enterprise duplex print challenge, and a program to make reusable beverage cups available to employees.


In 2009, the company announced a new enterprise environmental policy to employees, as well as local and national media.
