Plantation Baptist Church was founded in 1957 and has a diverse membership of about 600 people representing more than 20 different countries. Built in 1979, the current Plantation Baptist Church is a 31,000-square-foot, all-electric facility that is served by Florida Power and Light. According to property manager and church member Mrs. Devon Newton, the facility benefits from being designed with its solar orientation to minimize heat gain from the Florida sun. The concrete block stucco facility has excellent thermal and insulation qualities, which help keep the internal temperature stable.

During recent roof repairs, additional insulation was installed which helps minimize the amount of heat absorbed into the building from the outside. Mrs. Newton adds, "Our church deacons are responsible for adjusting thermostats and turning off the HVAC units when not in use. Church members have participated by placing signs in the kitchen that read, 'Be sure to turn the lights off when you leave.' We use good old fashioned logic and simply strive to not be wasteful."

The Church has its air-conditioning system serviced quarterly with air filters changed every three months to maintain efficiency, which will also extend the life of the equipment--another aspect of stewardship. An additional inexpensive solution applied to energy management was to lower window shades in order to block heat transfer from the outside.

As Devon Newton notes, "Energy management is an ongoing process. Our church continues to strive to reduce our energy consumption. As old inefficient light bulbs burn out, we replace them with new energy-efficient compact fluorescents. When building repairs are needed, we try to incorporate energy saving projects into the improvement (such as our recent roof insulation project). The goal is continued improvement. It would be a mistake for people to think they have to spend a lot of money in order to save energy. Not so! Our church encourages people to simply be good stewards as God commands."

"Our energy stewardship was motivated by our desire to obey the Word of God. We believe the Bible teaches the principle of Stewardship for God's people. A steward is someone who manages another's resources. We believe God created the World as written in Genesis, and because He created it, He owns it and He allows us the responsibility to manage His resources. We use the slogan 'Not wasting the Lord's money' to spearhead our energy management."
