Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa
2552 Kalakaua Avenue
Honolulu, HI 96815
The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, located in the pulse of Waikiki, offers 1,310 refurbished guest rooms and suites with private verandas providing spectacular views of the surrounding beaches and mountains. Restaurants, a spa, pools, fitness and business centers, shops and the fact that the hotel is conveniently located to many cultural activities are not the only impressive features of the hotel. The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort also is a top performer in terms of its energy performance, earning the ENERGY STAR for the second consecutive year.
Marriott, an ENERGY STAR Partner since 200, launched an ambitious company-wide effort, in partnership with its hotel owners and franchises, to help improve the environment and control energy costs. All hotels receive an Energy Conservation Program Resource Guide and hotel engineers and general managers complete Energy Conservation Program training. In recognition of its actions to promote energy efficiency, Marriott was recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in 2006.
At the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, this message of energy conservation has not been lost. New and innovative strategies for energy management were actively explored and implemented during the recent $60 million renovation project. Improvements included the installation of energy efficient lighting fixtures; replacing aging air conditioning units with new, energy efficient units; installing variable frequency drives to larger horsepower motors to reduce consumption; and replacing air handling, pumps, supply fan and exhaust fan motors with premium energy efficient models.
The biggest, and perhaps most significant, change was the installation of a new energy management system. The existing system was aging and provided limited capability for monitoring and controlling energy consumption. Now, with the new system in place, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa has vastly improved its approach to managing energy throughout the resort. Hotel engineers can now control all of the facility's many systems and expand load shedding of systems to manage demand spiking. The new energy management system also is very user-friendly which allows the hotel's engineers to adapt to the constantly changing needs of the resort.
Investing over one million dollars for energy improvements to the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa produced annual savings of $350,000. In addition, the hotel received over $220,000 in rebates from the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) as part of its Energy$olutions for Business Program. The savings, however, are not expected to stop there. At the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, energy conservation is viewed as a continuous process and future plans include upgrading guestroom air conditioning controls and occupancy sensors as well as further lighting replacements.
Marriott designates a "champion" at each hotel to promote and implement best practices and procedures identified through internal benchmarking. Hotels that meet these criteria and demonstrate ongoing achievement are recognized annually with an Environmental Conscious Hotel Operations (ECHO) award. The ECHO program offers guidance to hotels in five key areas: water and energy conservation, respecting and preserving wildlife, clean air initiatives, waste management, and clean-up campaigns.
"Our strong involvement in Marriott's Environmental Conscious Hotel Operations program proved to be advantageous in our recognition as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year as we were already promoting and implementing the best practices and procedures identified through internal benchmarking."-- Gerald Okamoto, Director of Engineering, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa
