Opened in 1956 and with two additions since, Brigham Elementary School is a 55,156-square-foot building serving approximately 385 pre-K through fifth-grade students. A renovation in the summer of 2008 provided this building with a one-pipe geothermal system that supplies air conditioning in addition to heating. Also, this HVAC change has provided additional energy savings in a building that already earned the ENERGY STAR with the former heating (limited air conditioning) system. This site has been a model for energy efficiency in an older building thanks to the cooperation of staff and students.

To help address a dwindling Operations and Maintenance Fund budget, the Board of Education signed a contract with Energy Education, Inc. in late 2004 to assist with utility management and cost containment. The formal application of the program began August 1, 2005. Thus, August 1, 2004 through July 31, 2005 became the baseline year for building performance comparison. Using the methods developed by Energy Education, Inc., which include having an Energy Educator Manager work in the district and expert consultants visit frequently to assist with both building and data analysis, the school district began achieving energy savings.  As a "people-based program," the major goal was to teach each employee and student to think about energy efficiency.

Employees at this site clearly embraced the energy efficiency concepts advocated by Energy Education, Inc. and ENERGY STAR. Steps were taken to minimize energy needs at all times but in particular evenings, weekends, and holidays.  Accordingly, the school has realized more than $19,500.00 in annual energy savings.  The cooperation among custodial, teaching, cooking, and administrative staff has contributed greatly to the success of energy efficiency efforts at this school.

Communication for this site involves:
-- Sending a monthly newsletter electronically to each employee.
-- Sharing monthly savings with the superintendent.
-- Holding a meeting twice a year with the building administrator, head custodian, and energy manager.
-- Giving reports to the Board of Education twice per year.
-- Reporting information in local news media.

"This school exemplifies energy savings that can occur in an older, less energy-efficient building. The hard work of staff resulted in careful awareness of unneeded energy use and adjustments for night and weekends. Further reduction came with the addition of geothermal heating and cooling in 2008."

-- Bruce Boswell, Energy Manager, McLean County Unit District Five
