One of Hines' first high-rise developments, and still a distinctly elegant feature of the Houston skyline, One Shell Plaza is a 50-story, 1.6 million-square-foot office building, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. One Shell Plaza's exterior, clad in travertine marble, is a series of closely spaced columns that taper gently upward from a landscaped plaza. These columns project slightly in paired bays on each fa?ade, creating a subtle undulation in the exterior. Among the distinctive interior features of One Shell Plaza are the presence of the Plaza Club, with fine dining, entertainment, and meeting facilities (and a 49th-floor view) and the Shell Oil Company Museum in the lobby. One Shell Plaza was completed in 1971.

 

One Shell Plaza earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance as a result of retrofits and upgrades, including the replacement of building light fixtures with high-efficiency three-lamp fluorescent fixtures with electronic ballasts. In addition, air handling units throughout the building were fitted with variable frequency drivers (VFDs), and the building control system was upgraded, giving building engineers centralized control over energy demand at One Shell.
