St. Francis Eastside is a hospital of the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System serving Greenville and upstate South Carolina since 1990. This is a 212,190-square-foot, four-story facility with 92 staffed beds. St Francis Eastside is a community hospital providing the full complement of women's health services (obstetrics, ultrasounds, neo-natal nursery) for the Bon Secours St. Francis System along with comprehensive in-patient and outpatient services. This facility is also home of the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System's major orthopedic services. Clinical services include general medical and surgical, supported by comprehensive radiology (x-ray through MRI) and full on-site laboratory.
St. Francis Eastside credits its local and corporate leadership for the passion to fulfill Bon Secours St. Francis Health System's corporate values, which include being good stewards, saving energy resources, and reducing its carbon footprint.
In 2006, St. Francis Eastside benchmarked the hospital using the U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, resulting in an ENERGY STAR score of 32. Thus began a journey to awareness and a deeper understanding of energy consumption and the related costs. In 2010, the engineering department embarked on a low-/no-cost retro-commissioning program by ensuring the mechanical systems were functioning as designed, if not better. The engineering department also established a documented process to identify and remove initially temporary repairs that had inadvertently become permanent. Identifying the root causes to this practice and correcting these procedures has encouraged staff to engage the program. As a result of this effort, St. Francis Eastside has experienced a positive change in its approach to equipment repair and an 85 percent reduction in HVAC-related service calls. This has enabled the engineering department to dramatically increase the number of preventative maintenance checks performed, changing its approach from reactive to proactive. Other items addressed include correcting failing dampers, actuators, and steam traps, as well as the repair of torn and damaged pipe insulation. The engineering department also initiated a Chiller Optimization Program for three different-capacity chillers, in which the correctly sized chiller was matched to existing demand. Utilizing wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures, St. Francis Eastside has been able to operate in full economizer mode without a chiller for 2-3 months annually.
St. Francis Eastside partnered with several local businesses in their particular fields of expertise to assist in creating the environment for continuous improvement; these efforts yielded a 22 percent reduction in energy consumption. St. Francis is very excited that something as simple as awareness and small changes in behavior has motivated the engineering department to establish the best practices that propelled St. Francis Eastside from an ENERGY STAR performance score of 32 to 82 and has earned the honor of being the first ENERGY STAR certified hospital in South Carolina.
The Bon Secours St. Francis Health System demonstrates its commitment to energy conservation in many ways. For instance, the corporate organization has adopted Portfolio Manager, EPA’s ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool, as the official tool to track energy conservation progress. St. Francis is creating a corporate-wide energy awareness program including required training as part of the Employee Education Program. St Francis has had several successful awareness campaigns designed to create an environment wherein everyone assumes responsibility for reducing energy consumption. During Earth Week, the engineering department has given away free CFL light bulbs and coupons for more free CFL light bulbs. St. Francis is constantly seeking opportunities to continue being good stewards of their resources.
