Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, a more than 800-bed regional medical center, is among the largest public health systems in Florida. With about 4,000 staff members, more than 800 physicians, and 1,000 volunteers, the system is one of Sarasota County?s largest employers. A community hospital founded in 1925, Sarasota Memorial is governed by the nine-member elected Sarasota County Public Hospital Board. It is a full-service health system with specialized expertise in heart, vascular, cancer, and neuroscience services, as well as a network of outpatient centers, long-term care, and rehabilitation among its many programs. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital providing obstetrical services, pediatrics, and Level III neonatal intensive care in Sarasota County.

The hospital?s utilities are distributed from a Central Energy Plant capable of producing 6,000 tons of air conditioning and 100 percent emergency back-up power through five (2.5 megawatt) generators. The building houses a centralized building automation system (BAS) that monitors electrical power consumption, water usage, steam production, and use of chilled water for air conditioning at cost per ton. The BAS assists in managing daily utility use and expenses.

By working with ENERGY STAR since 2004, and in conjunction with several utility initiatives, Sarasota Memorial has greatly reduced total energy costs per year, thanks to the support of the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board. Energy-saving projects include re-lamping the facility with T-8 fluorescent lighting and implementing a program that uses light-emitting diode technology in exterior and interior corridors. In 2012, more than 40 solar panels were installed to heat hot water. The system is expected to produce 1 million Btu?s of hot water per day. Further installations of solar hot water systems are planned throughout the complex.

Sarasota Memorial is committed to managing utility expenses for the benefit of the Sarasota community. The savings not only improve the hospital's carbon footprint but also provide additional funds for critical medical services.
