Highland Hospital is a 261 bed General Hospital located in Rochester, New York.  The Highland Hospital Facilities Department has worked over many years to conserve energy while maintaining comfort for patients and visitors.  Highland Hospital has invested in energy savings equipment over the years including a high efficiency 750 ton electrical chiller with the highest efficiency available at the time.  Ongoing maintenance focuses on efficient operation, including boiler efficiency monitoring, steam trap performance and effective condensate return.  The Highland Hospital Facilities relies on DDC controls to monitor critical systems performance.

Currently, Highland is exploring a range of additional energy savings measures that could further improve the hospital's operational and financial performance, while enhancing the long-term environment of care.  Possible self-funding, grant-eligible improvements include central plant upgrades (e.g., new chiller with < 0.35 kw/ton IPLV; boiler controls), advanced HVAC control strategies (e.g., variable volume/variable pressure; ventilation reset), lighting upgrades and water conservation. 

 

Benchmarking our energy consumption through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is a logical step in our on-going efforts to be energy efficient.  With a rating of 88 out of 100 shows that our focus on energy has paid off.  We will continue to use ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to ensure that we continue to be in the top 15% of energy efficient hospitals in the nation.
