Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township is one of the largest school communities in the metropolitan Indianapolis area, with over 12,000 scholars, from kindergarten to high school. The Metropolitan School District of Pike Township is an award winning school district, widely regarded as an education leader for high academic standards, innovative education programs, state-of-the-art facilities, strong parental and community partnerships, exceptional students, and acclaimed educators. Our district is comprised of nine elementary schools serving students in kindergarten through 5th grade, three middle schools serving students in 6th through 8th grade, an independent Freshman Center, and Pike High School. We also have the Pike Preparatory Academy, which serves middle school scholars in need of additional support in the areas of behavior and/or academics, and high school students who benefit from an alternative learning environment.

Established in 1998, the energy management program provides a complex, highly structured, people-oriented strategy for the district. The Metropolitan School District of Pike Township improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its buildings. Through commitment, changed behavior patterns, and careful ongoing auditing, the district has saved more than $11 million (24%) in annual energy bills over the 17 year period.

Opened in 1972, Guion Creek Middle School is a 215,000 square-foot building serving 6th grade through 8th grade students. The building went through a renovation in 1994 with upgrades to the HVAC equipment and the building automation system. In 2012 the building underwent another major renovation, when the heat pump water was converted to an air loop system to a geothermal heat pump system. The conversion included new high efficiency heat pumps, variable speed loop pump control, energy recovery units for pretreatment of outside air, and a building automation system with Direct Digital Controls (DDC) that employs technologies to limit power consumption and equipment operation time while maintaining a comfortable learning environment. Also during the 2012 conversion, additional insulation was added to the building envelope, the parking light lights were converted to LED lighting, and high efficiency natural gas boilers were installed for domestic hot water.

We are immensely proud of the great work of our ENERGY STAR labeled school, Guion Creek Middle School. The students and staff in cooperation with our District Energy Manager have worked to be more efficient in conserving energy and our natural resources. Guion Creek Middle School is truly leading the way in not only Indianapolis but the state of Indiana. We have a clear picture of our energy consumption. It will enable us to make better energy management decisions as we move forward. This has been an extremely positive endeavor thus far. The ENERGY STAR designation reminds everyone who lives and works in the Pike community that in addition to being an outstanding academic institution, Guion Creek Middle School is a leader in reducing and conserving energy.
