building

Centrally located on the vast 700-acre Corporate Campus site in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this two-story, 80,000 square foot glass and steel building serves as one of several office building facilities for Armstrong World Industries, the country's largest manufacturer of resilient and hardwood flooring and acoustical ceiling systems.

Constructed in 1996, this building provides an office work space environment for 186 occupants, hosting the Floor Products and Corporate Purchasing staff groups for the corporation. It consists of two levels, with an open, skylight-filled atrium that reveals wide walking spaces and open stair cases between levels.

The building incorporates a campus-wide building automation system (BAS) and controls to maintain comfort for all interior spaces. All HVAC equipment uses CFC-free refrigeration and central boiler plant steam energy as sources for their respective space conditioning systems. The advanced HVAC system incorporates energy-efficient motors for all air handlers and pumps serving the building, along with an Energy Management Control System (EMCS) to control these motor-driven systems and space temperatures. The air handlers utilize variable speed drives to reduce energy usage during part-load and non-occupied periods. Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) using carbon dioxide (CO2) sensing is a strategy employed to control the amount of ventilation (outside) air admitted to occupied spaces. By continuously measuring indoor CO2 levels, ventilation rates are controlled to a specific cfm (cubic feet per minute) level per person based on actual workspace occupancy. Variable Air Volume (VAV) terminal boxes and controls are utilized for all heated and cooled spaces.

Occupancy sensors control space lighting as well as VAV box operation when spaces are occupied. Dual-level lighting in perimeter office spaces further minimize the use of artificial light and associated heat gains during the cooling season. Vending misers are installed on all building snack and cold drink machines, reducing the energy required to operate employee break area appliances.
